Help

Entries are displayed in date order, recent first.

Each entry is tagged with one or more categories. Entries that don't fit a particular category are posted under the General category.

You can see all posts by clicking on "Archives" in the right-hand menu.

Search is not case-sensitive. You can search for a (partial) word or a phrase. The search engine is very simple so don't use wildchars ("*?.") as they don't do anything.

Show all posts sorted by Category by clicking on the "Categories" link. You can show all posts within a category by clicking on that category.

Show all posts sorted by Date by clicking on the "Archives" link. You can show all posts within a particular month by clicking on that month.

You can subscribe to an RSS feed. The link is under "Feeds" in the blog's sidebar menu.

Privacy

With the exception of comment details explained in the Terms and Conditions, I won't share your information with anyone unless I have to by law.

Visitors

[Updated Jan 2012] I started using Google Analytics at the beginning of 2012 as an experiment to see if it provides better information than the AXS software. The main thing I want to know is how visitors came to the blog, such as what search terms they used to find this site. I want to get an idea of what their (your) interests are, so I can write stuff that is more relevant. That's it. I am not doing any deep data analysis. But it means I can't say that I don't track you from one visit to the next, because that is exactly what Google Analytics does do.

If it is an issue for you, turn off javascript or use the NoScript extension for your browser (which I do) and block Google Analytics.

I don't track you from one visit or session to another. Like all webservers, the hosting company's webserver logs IP addresses. I do use some software to collate the information and display it in a graph. It's purely for interest's sake to see if anyone is actually reading the blog. (The software is AXS, if you're interested.)

Comments

I record your IP address as well as the details you provide. I do this to help verify your identity if you later contact me. The alternative would be requiring you to register, which I don't want to have to do.

Terms and Conditions

In general, anyone may make a comment. I welcome comments, so feel free. The paragraphs below this one are simply to let me run my blog how I want without getting caught up in silly legalities.

I reserve the right to stop accepting comments from anyone. I reserve the right to delete any comment for any reason, but I'm unlikely to do so unless you are spamming or being abusive or inflammatory.

You are responsible for anything you write.

You grant me an irrevocable licence to display your work1. I reserve the right to display any comment at my discretion. I probably will agree to remove a comment if you have a good reason. Abusing the hell out of me and then regretting your perfidy being shown to the world is not a good reason.

I record your IP address as well as the details you provide. I do this to help verify your identity if you later contact me. The alternative would be requiring you to register, which neither of us want.

Your abbreviated IP address is displayed with your comments, shown like this: 192.168.xxx.xxx.   I reserve the right to display the address in full, but I'm unlikely to do so unless you are disrupting the place.

I've written more details on why I've done it this way in a blog post here.

1. Annoying, isn't it. Apparently necessary under US copyright law.
